Grand Canyon National Park - South Rim, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first national parks in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.

The canyon was created by the Colorado River over a 5.4 million year period. The canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, ranges in width from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 29 km) and attains a depth of over a mile (1.83 km) (6000 feet). Nearly two billion years of the Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. The "canyon began in the west, followed by another that formed in the east. Eventually, the two broke through and met as a single majestic rent in the earth, more commonly referred to as the "Grand Canyon Event" approximately 5.4 million years ago.

The canyon itself is an amazing sight to me. Although not 100% percent amazed. The timing to go to Grand Canyon is very important. The best time would be sunrise and sunset where you can view the multiple layers of earth formation millions of years ago. I reached Grand Canyon around 2pm at noon so it is just too bright to watch the canyon. I take the day trip to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas. The trip itself takes me 5 hours perway. Depart from my hotel at 6am, make a few stops for break and lunch before reaching Grand Canyon at 2pm. It is not near (700-800km) per way, but the trip is worth time spent. We stop by to few places during this trip and see the amazing sight of the US desert. The US interstate is really good in providing the connection between Las Vegas and Grand Canyon. The road is smooth and it lines along the extreme temparatures of the deserts.

Nice pics. To be able to catch the changing views of Grand Canyon during sunrise & sunset, it is best to book a hotel near Grand Canyon.
